Introductory note

Hong Kong was one of the countries most extensively covered by my research work.  The construction of the new airport required the undertaking of many studies.  The first one I did was dated 1985 and since then I had quite a lot of opportunities to study the Hong Kong travel market (both inbound and outbound), assess the degree of flexibility of airlines to cope with the increasing saturation of the old airport Kai Tak in the centre of the city, assess the impact of the possible opening of direct links between Taiwan and Mainland China on traffic going via Hong Kong, assess the impact of the development of internationsl services at Shenzhen and Macau on Hong Kong traffic, and so on.  Benefitting from a very active cooperation from the Civil Aviation Department, from the Hong Kong Airport Authority, and from the Hong Kong Tourist Association, I managed to gather quite a large amount of extremely useful data to undertake all these studies.  Some of it remains confidential, so cannot be released or made mention of here in this page.

General comments on aviation statistics

Aviation statistics are fairly comprehensive in Hong Kong.  It is an ideal world for air transport researchers.   However, some of the useful data may be confidential or may be accessible under certain conditions (depending on who is requesting the reseatch project and for what purposes).

 

Civil aviation statistics

The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department gather aviation statistics concerning Hong Kong Airport.  The address is :

Airport statistics

The Hong Kong Airport Authority also gather traffic statistics but they are not so easily available.  The Authority has a web site that you can access in clicking here.  But this site does not contain comprehensive statistics.  You may however address your request to :

Visitor statistics

The Hong Kong Tourist Association compiles very interesting and comprehensive statistics on visitor arrivals by country of origin and by month.  They also gather information on outgoing residents by country of destination.  They publish very useful reports that you can obtain free of charge.   You may address your request at :
