- Introductory note
- India is a vast country with a
large population. The Indian travel market is still at its infancy, and it may take
quite a few years before it is developed, but when this happens, we will take about many
million travellers, not only flight domestic flights within the country but making trips
abroad. Economic ties with its big neighbor which is China have not been rally
developed. But imagine just one moment what would happen in terms of passenger
traffic when two adjacent countries which are among the largest in the world in terms of
population, develop such links !!!
-
- For the time being, there are two
distinct international travel markets to and from India : (a) the Gulf travel
market, made up of Indian seasonal workers, mainly involved with construction work in the
Gulf States. This market was affected by the Gulf crisis in 1991. (b) the
other international travel markets, with most of this traffic generated from abroad (a
mixture of ethnic ties and tourism).

- General comments on
aviation statistics
- Statistics on air traffic are
comprehensive, but the difficulty we face in using them is that they are covering fiscal
years (April-March), so any reconcilation with other sources could be difficult.
-
- Civil aviation statistics
- The Air Transport Directorate put
together every year a comprehensive report titled "India Air Transport
Statsitics". Statistics are broken down by airline and by airport. They
list the main origin-destination flows for passenger and cargo traffic. They build
up histroical timeseries for the key indicators of air transport activity. They shwo
also monthly profiles. Such document can be obtained from :
-
- The Statistical Officer
- Air Transport Directorate

- There is an organisation in India
which gather traffic statistics covering Indian airports. The name of this
organisation is :

- India
- Tel : +9111-565 2896
- Fax : +9111-565 2839 or 2830
-
- This organisation put together a
"Review of Traffic" covering the airports of Bombay, calcutta, Delhi, Madras and
Trivandrum and showing traffic detail by airport, by month, by type of traffic, but not by
origin-destination.
